Mission
The Gilbrea Centre for Studies in Aging serves as a critical hub of research, teaching and outreach, with a mission to improve all aspects of the lives of older adults, in the community and in long-term care, by linking research, education, practice and policy at McMaster with local, national and global initiatives.

Gilbrea Centre's Assistant Director, Gail Elliot, Retirement:
The team at the Gilbrea Centre and the Department of Health Aging and Society would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Gail Elliot on her retirement from McMaster, after a successful 17 year long career here at the University. Thank you, Gail, for your hard work at the Gilbrea Centre for Studies in Aging (formerly the McMaster Centre for Gerontological Studies), as well as your commitment to educational training and the larger community. Most notably, we wish to acknowledge your work on the Montessori Methods for Dementia™ program that has spread across Canada and abroad to the United States, Australia, and Hong Kong. Your work has, and will continue to, improve the lives of many.
2012 McMaster Summer Institute on Gerontology
June 5th, 2012, The Waterfront Conference Centre, Hamilton, ON. Our 29th annual McMaster Summer Institute on Gerontology is in partnership with the Hamilton Council on Aging. This year's topic, "Is Your Organization Age-Friendly?" will be presented by Dr. Denise O'Connor. Please note that due to the interactive nature of the workshop the number of seats is extremely limited.

- The graduate students from the Department of Health Studies ran a very successful SOIHAS conference this past weekend (Feb 24th and 25th, 2012) at McMaster University on Healthy Aging Across the Lifecourse. SOIHAS is a graduate student conference that was created as a platform for interdisciplinary knowledge exchange and professional development in health and aging topics. Key-note speakers this year included: Dr. Amanda Grenier and Dr. Lori Schindel Martin, and Marilyn Desrosiers.
